What we actually know so much about multivitamins
We have only a couple of robust clinical trials on the effects of what Dr. Sesso terms a “real” multivitamin, considering all the literature on vitamins and health: a pill that contains important vitamins and minerals at the comparatively low amounts that the body usually needs.
Health Research II for the Doctors is the best study conducted so far. This was the first only large-scale randomized clinical trial to test a widely administered multivitamin that contained the daily needs of 31 minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, like the ones most people take.
For more than a decade, a substantial number of male doctors take either a multivitamin or a placebo tablet. The findings were mixed, with small cancer and cataract decreases but no preventive effect against cardiovascular disease or deteriorating mental capacity. Is that safe?
